Double-entry accounting, as an API
BoringBooks is an accounting API for AI agents: one plain HTTP command per action, built to read as well to an agent as to a person. Post entries, run reports, and reconcile accounts from your code or your AI agent.
Sign in once, authorize your agent, and it can post. Free through 10,000 entries a month, no card.
curl https://boringbooks.io/v1/post_journal_entry \ -H "Authorization: Bearer $BORING_BOOKS_API_TOKEN" \ -d '{ "date": "2026-09-15", "memo": "Invoice 1042", "lines": [ { "account": "cash", "debit": "1250.00" }, { "account": "revenue", "credit": "1250.00" } ] }'
| Account | Debit | Credit |
|---|---|---|
| Cash | 1,250.00 | |
| Revenue | 1,250.00 | |
| Balanced | 1,250.00 | 1,250.00 |
Start by asking your agent
Paste this into Claude Code or any coding agent. It reads a guide written for agents, so it sets up your first ledger from the docs instead of guessing.
Help me set up BoringBooks. Read https://boringbooks.io/llms.txt first, then walk me through creating my first ledger step by step.
Rather do it yourself? Command reference
Agents draft. You post.
Anything an agent proposes arrives as a draft with a reason attached. Nothing reaches the books without an explicit approval.
Matches 14 earlier payouts from the same source, all posted to Revenue. Fees of 141.78 split to Payment processing.
- Every write is reversible
- Entries post as immutable; corrections are reversing entries, never edits.
- Every draft has a reason
- Agents must supply plain-language justification the reviewer can check.
- Every record has an API view
- Open “View API response” on any row to see exactly what the API returned.
Built to be left, not locked
The ledger is yours. The interface is plain enough for an agent to use and plain enough for you to audit.
Readable by agents and people
One command per action, named for what it does, with errors written as sentences. Agents guess less and humans can read the same request in the docs.
You own your data
Every entry, account, and approval is exportable in full as CSV or JSON, any time, including the reasons agents gave.
No lock-in
Standard double-entry, standard chart of accounts. Take the export to your accountant or another system and nothing has to be translated.
